William J. Schulz, affectionately known by the nickname "The Smoke," was born on February 20, 1942, in Chicago. He passed away on August 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by his deep devotion to family, community service, and a rich career in various fields.

A proud alumnus of Harper High School in Chicago, William dedicated a significant portion of his life to public service as a member of the Oak Forest Fire Department for 20 years. He rose through the ranks to culminate his career as the Assistant Chief of the Department, a role that showcased his commitment to the safety and wellbeing of his community. In addition to his fire service, William worked at the University of Chicago Press from 1963 to 1984, sold ink with Hanshy for five years, and concluded his professional journey at Premier Ink Company until retiring in 1999.

William was known for his caring and devoted nature, often making those around him feel comfortable and at ease. Outside of work, he had a passion for wood carving and was an avid softball player, proudly representing the Oak Forest Bombers. His interests and personality drew people to him, and he touched the lives of many throughout his journey.

He is survived by his beloved daughters Linda and her husband Dave and Laura and her husband Alain, as well as his cherished grandchildren Max and his wife Samantha, David and his wife Brittany, Nick and his fiancee Liz, Jess and her husband Chris. William also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Everly, Connor, James, Landon, Xander, Grayson, and Valery, who will carry forward his legacy of love. His family also includes dear nephews Don and his wife Norine, Steve and his wife Cynthia, Kevin and his fiancee Hannah, as well as nieces Debra and Jennifer and her husband Carlos. He is additionally survived by his sister Dolores and her husband Donald, his companion Shirlee Jasien, his loyal dog, "The Legend" and his former spouse Judy Blakesley.

William was predeceased by his parents, Ruth Carlson and William Schulz, whose influence helped shape the compassionate man he became. As he is remembered, the impact William made on his family, friends, and community will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.

A memorial service to honor William J. Schulz will be held on September 2, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at McKenzie Funeral Home, located at 15618 S Cicero Ave, Oak Forest, IL 60452.
